“Are forks bigger in Texas? Do they grow bigger as you fly over the state border into Texas? I keep hearing everything is bigger in Texas, is it true?” These questions came with a serious look, and an eyebrow raise that turned into a smile. A real question. This is a good example of the important discussions Connor and I had this summer. There have been others – what’s your favorite day of the week, favorite food, favorite song, favorite movie, if you could have a new car what would it be (me trying to answer in a non-boring way thinking of safety and reliability features) and more. In these moments we have laughed, shared stories, and lived life, all while we plan and execute a big change in our lives.
I pray I will always remember the summer of 2025. It has been the summer of mom and son, while Scott was already in Brussels (see future post for details). It’s the summer our 14-year-old boy grew in front of my eyes and matured in immeasurable ways. In these hot days of summer, he kept moments fun when there was stress, joined in as a teammate to assist with all moving necessities, gave hugs freely and handled manly tasks around the house like a pro. It was the summer he always had sunglasses and a hat on, did his laundry on his own, managed Bucky with few reminders and started liking the art of a good romantic comedy. We walked the dog, rode bikes almost daily, weeded the yard and lifted weights together. It’s the summer he learned he can overcome an injury and get back in the game. It’s the summer he said, thank you more times than I can count. The summer he complimented me when I got dressed up. And the summer he coined the phrase – “I love you, mom, say it back!”
Summer 2025 we traveled to Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Washington DC, and Belgium. He loves adventure. He loves the beauty of our country, always pointing out a pretty landscape, a unique building, a funny sign that doesn’t make sense or a cool car that he has researched (more about his car knowledge in a future post). Part 1 Summer 2025 is coming to an end; in 3-days we travel to Belgium to reunite with Scott. While the mom and son duo summer has been splendid, there is nothing in the world like our trio as a family. We will kick off Part 2 Summer 2025 as a family with Belgium waffles while we have a month to travel and enjoy Europe before school starts. I hope you will follow our adventures!
Thank you, God, for all our blessings. The ones we have worked hard for and the ones we never planned. Please bless our family and friends, as we miss them dearly already!
